Set off on an enjoyable narrated tour to Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød. This elegant Dutch Renaissance structure straddles three small islands. It has all the trappings of a fairytale castle, but it was gainfully employed as a Royal residence and setting for important ceremonial events from the 1600s to the 1850s. It now serves as the National Museum of History and is best known for its outstanding collection of portraits -- the largest of its kind in Denmark. Your guided tour begins at the Neptune Fountain and visits the rooms of the King's Wing, the Church, and the impressive Knight's Hall, which boasts an intricate carved wooden ceiling.
Take photos of the Royal Family's summer residence -- Fredensborg Palace -- during a brief stop here.
Heading even further north through the picturesque countryside of Northern Zealand, you will find the town of Elsinore. View Kronborg Castle and stop for photos here. William Shakespeare chose this magnificent structure as the setting for his play Hamlet. It is a suitably dramatic Renaissance castle, built in 1420 and expanded in the 1500s, situated on the narrow sound between Denmark and Sweden. Kronborg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Continue along the coastal road with a lovely view of the sea and the impressive manor houses on the outskirts of Copenhagen. You'll stop at the Little Mermaid statue, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen. No visit to Copenhagen is complete without seeing her -- the city's tiniest and most famous icon.
Notes:
This tour is available only to guests whose cruise does not begin or end in Copenhagen. The drive between Copenhagen and Frederiksborg is approximately one hour each way. Participants must be able to negotiate uneven surfaces, cobblestone courtyards and multiple flights of stairs (100 steps or more) inside the castle. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair. Flash photography is not permitted at Frederiksborg Castle. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Please be advised that no food is included in this tour; eat a hearty meal prior to departure and bring a snack if you wish.
