From Mallory Square, walk to President Truman's Little White House. The Harry S Truman Little White House in Key West was built in 1890 as the first officer's quarters on the naval station. The wooden structure on the waterfront of Key West was converted into a single-family dwelling in the early 20th century. Thomas Edison resided here during World War I, working on depth-charge research. In 1946, Harry Truman began visiting the island and the 'Winter White House,' returning for 175 days of his presidency. President Dwight Eisenhower used the home while recuperating from a heart attack in 1956. In 1961, the Little White House hosted President John F. Kennedy and British Prime Minister Harold MacMillan during the Bay of Pigs incident. In 1996, President Jimmy Carter celebrated New Year's Eve here with family and friends. In 2000, the Joint Chiefs of Staff for Great Britain, Germany, the USA, and France had a private dinner at the Little White House. In 2001, Secretary of State Colin Powell opened peace talks in this house between the representatives of Armenia and Azerbaijan. In 2005, President Bill Clinton and then-Senator Hillary Clinton enjoyed a tropical respite in the Little White House.
When you're ready, walk back to Mallory Square.
