Relax on board the Flam Railway and enjoy one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world on this scenic journey from Flåm to Myrdal and back. The ride takes you from the station in Flåm, set in the farthest corner of Aurlandsfjord, to the mountain station at Myrdal on the railway to Bergen. This is one of the steepest standard-width railway lines in the world. The gradient is 5.5% over almost 80% of the trip, meaning a one-foot elevation gain for every eighteen feet of track.
Along the way, you will pass some of Norway's wildest and most beautiful landscapes- a marvelous statement given the outstandingly scenic nature of this truly enchanting country. Over the 12-mile track, rivers flow through deep ravines, waterfalls plunge from steep, snow-capped mountains, and farms cling to almost-vertical slopes.
Winding tunnels that bore through the mountains are a lasting testament to both the tenacity and technical skill of Norway's railway engineers. Journey along the foot of the mountains and through the natural beauty of the Flam Valley. Admire the majestic Aurlandsfjord branch of Sognefjord -- the largest fjord in the world.
Notes:
The walk to Flåm station is approximately 300 metres and some standing is required prior to boarding the train. There are a few steep steps to embark the train and the journey is approximately 60 minutes each way. Seats are not assigned and are on a first come first serve basis so it is not guaranteed that groups will be sat together. There is a limited taped commentary on the train. This tour involves several tunnels. The train stops at Myrdal for 5-10 minutes before the return journey; as soon as it is ready it will depart therefore guests are requested to remain on the train. There is limited storage space on the train for foldable wheelchairs. All guests must be able to negotiate the steps to board the train. Please note that this tour is non-refundable 14 days prior to the call at Flam.
