Escape the hustle and bustle of San Juan and head to its green outskirts on a short, scenic drive. Here, you'll encounter an artisanal surprise -- the San Juan Distillery. Established in 2011 in the coastal town of Vega Alta, this is the first and only sugarcane estate distillery in Puerto Rico.
Following a rum-based welcome beverage, you'll discover how sugarcane from Puerto Rican includes heirloom varietals. For making rum, these are grown, harvested, and fermented before the juice is distilled in French Cognac pot stills.
A private, informative, engaging walking tour showcases the grounds and the mysteries of small-batch rum production. Your guide will explain the processes step-by-step, and you will see up close what it takes to create farm-to-table rum. Taste up to four samples of the rum you've learned about on tour.
A short drive brings you to a Puerto Rican restaurant for a three-course dining experience. The foods you'll enjoy are influenced by the Spanish colonists, West African enslaved peoples, and the Taino natives who lived here centuries before Christopher Columbus arrived.
Relax as you return to the pier by air-conditioned van.
