A scenic drive takes you over Sognefjell Mountain Pass -- the highest mountain road in Norway at 4,700 feet above sea level. The scenery offers stunning views of the Hurrungane mountain range area, where 27 of the highest peaks in Norway can be found. This is an ancient thoroughfare linking east and west. You'll see old varder -- small stone pyramids or cairns which were used to mark a safe route for those traveling this inhospitable territory on foot or on horseback. The mountain road was first opened to cars in 1938 after approximately 200 unemployed youths worked on it for two summers with simple tools and in harsh weather conditions. The road is closed in winter.
The scenery along the route is varied and beautiful. You will stop at the plateau on Sognefjell Mountain for spectacular views and a chance to stretch your legs and take photos. Return to Skjolden via the same road.
Notes:
The tour involves predominantly sightseeing from the comfort of the coach. There are a few stops for photographs; however, participants can opt to remain on the coach. The drive involves a few hairpin bends and steep, winding roads. Guests who are prone to motion sickness should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication. Heavy traffic during the summer months can cause delays.
