Experience the best of Eidfjord on this small-group outing (maximum 25 privileged guests).
The village of Eidfjord has only about 1,000 inhabitants; however, due to its production of hydroelectric power, it is one of Norway's wealthiest communities.
This small-group experience starts with a panoramic drive through the spectacular and steep Måbødalen Valley. The road leads to the vast Hardanger Mountain Plateau -- actually the largest mountain plateau in Northern Europe. It is also part of Norway's largest National Park.
Stop at the Vøringsfossen Waterfall, which cascades almost 600 feet into the wild Måbø Valley below.
Next up, you'll drive to the Sysen Dam -- the main reservoir for the Sima Power Station and one of Norway's largest embankment dams. The dam's watertight core is lined with filter zones of sand and gravel, weighted down and supported by large quantities of rock. The dam itself is more than a half-mile long, 265 feet tall and 813 feet wide at the base.
The Hardangervidda Nature & Wildlife Center offers exhibits of the wildlife in the area and an audiovisual presentation about the waterfalls and dams.
Return to the village of Eidfjord in time for a typical Norwegian lunch. It's served in a delightful wooden building that creates a cozy setting. This is your chance to taste delicious local foods such as reindeer and fresh vegetables. After a cup of coffee or tea, you will walk back to the ship, just a few minutes away.
Notes:
In Spring (April & May), some viewpoints or attractions are inaccessible due to snow, causing roads to remain closed; this varies greatly from season to season. An alternative viewpoint or attraction may be substituted. The onboard Shore Excursions team will provide the latest details approximately 48 hours prior to the call at Eidfjord. Tour may be canceled at short notice. Views are weather-dependent. Guests are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes.
