How Cruising & Local Supplier Partnerships Enhance Guest Experience

View of Holland America Line cruise ship at Port of Seattle.

At Holland America Line, we care deeply about providing you with an unforgettable cruise experience. That includes using fresh, local ingredients onboard so you can indulge in authentic flavors in the regions you’re visiting. It takes a village to source these rich flavors and ingredients in ports around the world, including our homeport in Seattle.

It was in that spirit that we invited local suppliers from the Seattle area and our partners at the Port of Seattle to step aboard Eurodam for an appreciation luncheon, recognizing their contributions to our guests’ culinary experience in the Pacific Northwest. Festivities also included a galley tour and behind-the-scenes look at how we take great care in bringing their culinary products from port to plate.

How Cruising Benefits Seattle’s Economy

Our collaborations with local suppliers help benefit the local economies to which we cruise – from product consumption to tourism. Here’s a glimpse of the difference cruising makes in Seattle alone:

  • Every 7 days, fresh fish, produce and other products from local Seattle suppliers provide for more than 4,000 weekly Holland America Line guests sailing to Alaska from Seattle. Once we arrive in Alaska, we work closely with their local suppliers to bring local ingredients onboard – including mouthwatering sustainable fresh fish – to delight guests on the trip back from Alaska to Seattle.
  • In the 2024 Alaska sailing season, our cruise ships will dock in Seattle 38 times, meaning nearly 144,000 Holland America Line guests will travel through the Port of Seattle. Each time one of our cruise ships visits Seattle, our guests and crew directly infuse over $250,000 into the local economy through purchases for food, flowers, fuel and discretionary spending with local merchants.
  • Each year the cruise industry brings in $900 million for the local Seattle-area economy.
